MAYA + XGEN + ZBRUSH + SUBSTANCE + REDSHIFT
In this personal project, I wanted to create a claymation-inspired character in 3D. My goal was to keep the process efficient and aim for about 60% quality, focusing on completing the project without getting bogged down in tiny details. I gathered reference material through screenshots from Netflix.
One highlight was sculpting the hair in ZBrush. I tried several paid brushes from Gumroad but ultimately found that Shane Olson’s free ZBrush brushes worked best for my needs. To achieve a yarn-like texture on the sweater, I experimented with Maya’s XGen for the first time.
For the final presentation, I wanted to add a bit of motion instead of just a static turntable. I didn’t want to spend too much time on it, so after some advice from a friend, I tried Mixamo. I was pleasantly surprised by its simplicity and quality. To enhance the claymation feel, I set the keyframes to every other frame and added visibility animations to the eyebrows and eyelids to give a bit more expression.
